Biography

La Jarana is a Contemporary Jazz Ensemble originated in Montevideo, Uruguay in 2009.

This project started with the idea of create a dialogue between Contemporary Jazz and "Murga" Drums.

"Murga" Drums (in spanish "Batería de Murga") is a traditional percussion ensemble from Uruguay, originated at the begining of the 20th Century in Montevideo.

This percussion ensemble is formed by three percussionists: one for the Bass Drum, one for the Snare Drum, one for the Cymbals.

Traditionally "Murga" Drums are very popular in the Uruguayan Carnival, in fact, these percussion instruments provide the rhythmic foundation for a bigger ensemble called "Murga", formed basically by a choir.

During 20th Century this percussion ensemble developed (and still developing) many new rhythms, new sounds, new musical possibilities, and many musical fusions with other musical styles around the world, besides its traditional musical role.

In our repertory we include popular music from Uruguay and many latin styles such as Chacarera, Samba, Tango, and Cuban Son.

We also play our own versions of Jazz Standards and we have our own compositions.

La Jarana participated in Jazz and Percussion Festivals such as:

-International Jazz Festival "JAZZ A LA CALLE", Mercedes, Uruguay.

-"VII International Percussion Festival of Montevideo", Montevideo, Uruguay.

-"V International Jazz Festival of Montevideo", Montevideo, Uruguay.

-III Festival Internacional de Jazz de Tucumán, Argentina.

-Mercado Cultural Internacional CIRCULARTE, Medellín, Colombia.

In 2014 we released our first album called "La Jarana".
